TEDxMaastricht: Lucien Engelen: Crowdsource Your Health

TED talks are one of the best uses of time on the internet.  They provide thought provoking topics that can be entertaining and informative.  One of the most popular posts I have done was from TEDxMaastricht.  Below you will find another informative video from that group concerning how crowdsourcing can be beneficial in everyday healthcare.

You can use your smartphone to find a local ATM, but what if you need a defibrillator? At TEDxMaastricht, Lucien Engelen shows us online innovations that are changing the way we save lives, including a crowdsourced map of local defibrillators.

HIMSS12: Griffin Technology to Introduce New iPad Solutions for Healthcare Professionals

HIMSS12 is looking to be quite the exciting conference and exhibition.  There is more to see and do than you could possibly do in a month, let alone a week.

With the rapid growth of iPad use in the healthcare sector it is not surprising that companies would create ways to improve the quality of iPad use.  One of these companies is Griffin Technology who will be exhibiting a couple of new solutions designed specifically for healthcare professionals, as well as a few of their other, previously released offerings.

The full press release can be found on our news site, but here is a look at these great solutions:

AirStrap Med for iPad 2 is constructed as a combination of ABS and TPE, with a lightweight, two-piece frame that closes securely around the tablet, sealing it from moisture and fluids. An adjustable shoulder strap keeps the iPad within easy reach and the case’s non-porous, non-slip surfaces are fully sanitizeable with industry-standard cleaning and sterilization products. AirStrap Med will be available for $89.99 starting in April.

AirStrap Lite for iPad 2 provides a secure frame for the iPad, protecting back and edges without limiting access to the headphone jack, camera lens, volume controls and dock connector. A built-in neoprene strap on the back makes it possible to hold the tablet securely with one hand during use. AirStrap Lite will be available in March for $29.99.
Griffin’s MultiDock and Kiosk for iPad. MultiDock, Griffin’s remarkably successful offering in the business solution sector, is a station that simultaneously charges, syncs and stores up to 30 iPads, iPhones and iPods. MultiDock provides a compact, scalable power and sync solution perfect for medical practices, hospitals and institutions.Recently unveiled to an enthusiastic reception at the CES Consumer Electronics Show, Griffin’s Desktop and Floorstand Kiosk mounts for iPad provide protection and security in public-use scenarios, with access to the tablet’s Multi-Touch display. Built to withstand intense, everyday use in medical settings, the Kiosk for iPad is an ideal solution for patient check-in, hospital directory, and more.

mHealth Alliance Opens Membership to Anyone Actively Engaged In or Interested in mHealth

The mHealth Alliance, known for putting together the annual mHealth Summit, is opening membership to anyone actively engaged in, or interested in, mobile health.  Their goal is to bring together people from all sectors to create a community of people to advance mHealth around the world.

There is no fee for membership, but there is an application which are currently being accepted at mHealthAlliance.org/membership.  The application includes conveying your interest in mHealth as well as agreeing to a set of basic principles that govern the Alliance’s collaborations in the field.

“We know the mHealth field spreads across multiple sectors and cross-cutting areas,” said Patty Mechael, Executive Director of the mHealth Alliance. “We want to engage these stakeholders to accelerate mutual learning, networking, and collaboration. By mobilizing organizations with a common interest in and vision for mHealth, we believe we will accelerate the advancement of mobile technologies in a way that improves health outcomes and systems – especially in remote areas where health information and access is severely limited.”

Social media is ruling so many areas of commerce and industry, and this is really another attempt to take advantage of that trend.  The upside of groups like this is you don’t have to wade through the mountains of useless information on sites like Facebook to find something of quality.

Creating focused communities like this are a move in the right direction in terms of using social media.  Getting everyone together, on the same page, will do wonders for advancing the future of mHealth.
